2009 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design. the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano and toyota highlander. All of these vehicles are larger than they look, a result of their slippery styling. we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. A limited model was added for 2008 and new features were added. For 2009, there is a sport version, which features 22-inch alloy wheels mounting p265/40r22 pirelli scorpion zero tires and an eight-piece body kit to give it a sporty look. All models are powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard. Rear park assist is available and can help alert the driver to objects or people behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundthe ford edge is bigger than it looks in photos. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. The edge is eight inches shorter in overall length than the ford explorer yet its wheelbase is just two inches shorter. This means that, in relation to the explorer and speaking proportionately, the edge has it tires pushed farther outward, closer to the corners, both in length and width, which gives it a wider and longer stance on the road. (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. Visually, this aggressive stance makes the edge stand apart from the relatively tippy look of traditional suvs. the edge features ford's bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan. despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing. the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility. front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. the ford sync communications and entertainment system can be controlled via voice commands or dashboard buttons. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells. cargo carrying is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for improved rear-seat comfort. driving impressionunderway, the ford edge handles reasonably well, given its considerable size and weight. Sporty st and electric join newly redesigned lineup. introductionone of the most popular compacts on the market, the ford focus has a sharp, futuristic look that leaves behind old stereotypes of small, affordable american cars. Completely redesigned for the 2012 model year, the focus makes its claim as the technology and fuel-mileage leader in its class. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard and a 6-speed automatic is optional, with selectshift manual mode an option for the automatic. The standard 2. 0-liter engine makes 160 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque. epa fuel economy estimates for the 2013 ford focus are 26/36 mpg city/highway with 5-speed manual, 28/38 mpg with 6-speed automatic. the new 2013 focus st features a more powerful 2. 0-liter ecoboost engine that cranks out an impressive 247 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. Focus st comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox and sport-tuned suspension. Focus st comes as a hatchback only with a special body kit. The sporty focus st is rated 23/32 mpg city/highway. the focus electric is powered by a 107-kilowatt electric motor that has an estimated range of 76 miles per full charge and an epa energy efficiency equivalent rating of 110 mpge city and 99 mpge highway or 105 mpge combined. It's an electric car, so gas stations are a thing of the past. The focus electric competes most closely with the leaf, although the mitsubishi i-miev is a smaller, less expensive all-electric alternative. The soft materials are clearly high quality, while the hard trim looks slathered on. There's excellent legroom in front, but rear legroom is only moderate. The gauges are easy to read and include a big tachometer and speedometer with cool blue needles. the 2013 focus uses the myford touch connectivity interface powered by microsoft's sync. The driver uses three senses: see, hear, touch. Ford says the system is designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver, and maybe it was designed that way, but it doesn't always work that way. We found this latest version of myford touch difficult to use. on the road, the focus is exceptionally quiet. A lot of productive effort went into making the cabin silent, with luxury-levels of sound insulation practically everywhere, including the doors, windshield, carpet and headliner. Ride quality was smooth and soft. We found the standard engine extremely smooth with plenty of power. However, we thought the 6-speed automatic was imprecise in its shifting, while the 5-speed manual felt ropey. the 2013 ford focus competes with the toyota corolla, honda civic, chevrolet cruze, subaru impreza, hyundai elantra, mazda3, mitsubishi lancer, kia forte and volkswagen jetta. lineupthe 2013 ford focus comes in sedan and hatchback versions. The focus electric comes with cloth upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, 60/40 folding rear seats, myford touch and myford mobile interfaces, with two unique driving screens, rearview camera, reverse sensing system, mykey, rain-sensing wipers, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. safety equipment in all focus models includes six airbags with the latest technology, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitor. walkaroundthe ford focus looks like a big fiesta, with an unmistakably ford shape. The hatchback looks especially aerodynamic. It yields a 0. 295 coefficient of drag, an improvement by nearly 8 percent over the previous (pre-2012) focus. active grille shutters block airflow to the radiator when it's not required, which improves aerodynamics and fuel mileage. Nascar racers did this with cardboard and duct tape for years, but now it's fully electronic; the shutters have 15 different positions, based on engine temperature. Other cars such as the chevrolet cruze are doing this, as well. ford calls the distinctive grille split-trapezoid. There are eight thin horizontal bars in a huge-mouthed trapezoid whose wide side is the bottom and is divided into three segments by two body-colored vertical bars like catfish chin whiskers. It looks better than it sounds, balanced by a horizontal opening above it, with one thin chrome bar and a neat blue ford oval. The long thin trapezoidish headlamps wrap forward and downward from the cheeks of the car. They're like sweeping dragon's eyes, says ford. sculpted lines at the sills and door handles flow back from neat modest flared front fenders to give the focus a forward-moving slant: kinetic design energy, ford calls it. The windshield is steeply raked and roofline steeply dropped to the liftgate glass, making about as much of a teardrop as a chopped hatchback can be. The side window outline is shaped like a picture of smoke traveling over a sleek car in a wind tunnel. Big vertical taillamps make the focus look being safe and volvo-like. the focus se looks cleaner, we think, lacking chrome beltline trim. The 17-inch titanium wheels are multi-spoke wagon wheels, better looking than the optional 18-inch wheels that are like big chrome stars with thin prongs. the focus chassis uses a crash structure designed for the larger taurus. More than 55 percent is high-strength steels, including boron b-pillars and front beam, and a decoupling powertrain cradle to keep the engine out of the cabin in a head-on crash. interiorthe first thing we notice about the focus is its seats. Focus models have had comfortable seats for years tne the current models come standard in sturdy fabric, with leather optional. The seats in the focus are much better than those in the chevrolet cruze. the interior of the focus feels like a cockpit. With all its bells and whistles, we could easily imagine being a pilot with all those dials, switches, controls that feel like they wrap around to the elbows on the center stack, and led ambient lighting in a choice of seven colors. The focus electric feels even more futuristic, with two screens that show information about driving efficiency, charge capacity and other do-dads related to the electric powertrain. the gauges on the dashboard and instrument panel are easy to read: big tach and speedo with cool blue needles, fuel and engine temp between them, and easy-to-read digital info above the fuel and temp. However, we haven't been in a base s model, maybe it's got a more spartan interior missing the overkill trim. Ford says it's designed to be simple and completely intuitive for the driver. It is a true 4-speed,Bucket seats, with power steering and power top. Also has the engine with the factory 4 barrel carb. Anyone that is in to collector cars know what they have found here. It is my understanding that a little more than 9800 of these(deluxe) Convertibles were made. Now, narrow that down to 4spd cars (less than 200 built). It can haul more cargo than a chevy trailblazer or ford explorer yet it's easier to manuever than a chevy suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking, plus it'll fit in more garages. tahoe can carry five passengers and their gear at the same time. Pulling a trailer is no problem when equipped with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. on the road, tahoe is smooth and stable. It really is like a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a good choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. audio systems with touch-screen navigation are now available. Xm satellite radio delivers music, radio, sports, and other programming coast to coast. A rear-seat dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps the kids busy. safety features include hydroboost brakes, which maintain power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard and has been improved for 2005. Stabilitrak electronic stability control and traction control are available as options. Dual frontal air bags are standard; front side-impact air bags are optional. Latch child safety-seat anchors are provided. improvements for 2005 include a quieter, higher-capacity electric cooling fan; a higher-capacity alternator; and aerodynamic enhancements that promise slightly improved fuel economy on some models. Z71 also includes many of the same comfort and convenience items as the lt: the driver information center; bose nine-speaker stereo with rear audio controls, dual headphone jacks, and steering-wheel controls; power heated mirrors with turn signals and ground illumination; leather seating surfaces; power adjustable pedals; and six-way power front bucket seats. walkaroundchevy tahoe is an attractive truck, though it doesn't stand out with its conservative and familiar styling. It is essentially a shortened version of the chevy suburban and shares much in common with it. the tahoe is the same width as the suburban, but it is more than 22 inches shorter than the suburban and nearly 9 inches shorter than the ford expedition. The tahoe is also nearly 11 inches shorter than the stretched, midsize chevy trailblazer ext (and only about 5 inches longer than the standard trailblazer). But the tahoe is more than 4 inches wider than the trailblazer ext, an important benefit. tahoe comes with big outside mirrors that afford an excellent view rearward. The mirrors on lt and z71 models feature puddle lamps that light up the perimeter. Press a button and they fold in for parking in narrow places. Heating elements keep off frost and ice. The left mirror automatically dims to reduce headlamp glare. The hatch is made of aluminum for light weight. The hatch features a flip-up window, and being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. The front seats are big, wide, and fully adjustable in the lt. Optional seat heaters are easy to turn on and adjust. Switchgear is nicely designed and easy to operate. The map lights can be aimed. We appreciated the available power-adjustable pedals. Pressing a button moves the brake and accelerator pedals for an optimum driving position. This allows a shorter driver to move farther from the steering wheel (where the airbag is located). The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Separate electronic controls for the rear seating area improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard ls setup is a manually controlled hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. It works quite well. The third zone allows manual control of the rear air conditioning. Second-row bucket seats 490), an option on the lt, are less versatile than a bench seat, but more comfortable, more luxurious. We prefer the buckets. A pair of map lights flanks each dome light in the second and third row, a great feature when traveling or accessing gear. the tahoe provides slightly more cargo space behind the second row than the ford expedition does (63. 6 cubic feet vs. 60. 9 cubic feet). Folding the second-row seats down provides enormous cargo capacity, 104. 6 cubic feet of cargo space, a bit less than the expedition's 110. 5 cubic feet.
