It can haul more cargo than a chevy trailblazer or ford explorer yet it's easier to manuever than a chevy suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking, plus it'll fit in more garages. tahoe can carry five passengers and their gear at the same time. Pulling a trailer is no problem when equipped with the optional 5. 3-liter v8. on the road, tahoe is smooth and stable. It really is like a rock. It has plenty of power and its brakes work well. The cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. In any kind of driving, it's a good choice for someone who needs real carrying capacity. audio systems with touch-screen navigation are now available. Xm satellite radio delivers music, radio, sports, and other programming coast to coast. A rear-seat dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones keeps the kids busy. safety features include hydroboost brakes, which maintain power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard and has been improved for 2005. Stabilitrak electronic stability control and traction control are available as options. Dual frontal air bags are standard; front side-impact air bags are optional. Latch child safety-seat anchors are provided. improvements for 2005 include a quieter, higher-capacity electric cooling fan; a higher-capacity alternator; and aerodynamic enhancements that promise slightly improved fuel economy on some models. Generation 6 onstar with better hands-free capability is now standard on all tahoes. A z71 off-road package is available with 2wd or 4wd. It is essentially a shortened version of the chevy suburban and shares much in common with it. the tahoe is the same width as the suburban, but it is more than 22 inches shorter than the suburban and nearly 9 inches shorter than the ford expedition. The tahoe is also nearly 11 inches shorter than the stretched, midsize chevy trailblazer ext (and only about 5 inches longer than the standard trailblazer). But the tahoe is more than 4 inches wider than the trailblazer ext, an important benefit. tahoe comes with big outside mirrors that afford an excellent view rearward. The mirrors on lt and z71 models feature puddle lamps that light up the perimeter. Press a button and they fold in for parking in narrow places. Heating elements keep off frost and ice. The left mirror automatically dims to reduce headlamp glare. The hatch is made of aluminum for light weight. The hatch features a flip-up window, and being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. The front seats are big, wide, and fully adjustable in the lt. Optional seat heaters are easy to turn on and adjust. Switchgear is nicely designed and easy to operate. The map lights can be aimed. Rubber-lined cubbies on the center console offer places to organize odds and ends. The ashtray can be removed to reveal another nice cubby for sunglasses and stuff. Cup holders are well designed. Three power outlets in front and one in back deliver electricity for accessories. visibility is very good through big windows, but we'd like the option of an electronic park-assist feature to help maneuver this big rig in tight quarters. We appreciated the available power-adjustable pedals. Pressing a button moves the brake and accelerator pedals for an optimum driving position. This allows a shorter driver to move farther from the steering wheel (where the airbag is located). The tilt steering could use finer adjustments, but by adjusting the height and tilt of the seat it's possible for drivers of all sizes to find a comfortable position. Steering wheel-mounted controls add convenience and enable the driver to personalize functions. we love the lt's electronically controlled, automatic three-zone hvac system for its sophistication and ease of use. Change the driver's temperature, for example, and a panel displays the new temperature for a few moments, then display's the passenger's temperature, then displays the driver's temperature again. It's easy to operate the controls with the big knobs and a clear led display that's easy to understand. Separate electronic controls for the rear seating area improve comfort for second- and third-row passengers and pets. the standard ls setup is a manually controlled hvac system with three zones that allows temperature differentials of 30 degrees between driver and passenger. It works quite well. The third zone allows manual control of the rear air conditioning. Second-row bucket seats 490), an option on the lt, are less versatile than a bench seat, but more comfortable, more luxurious. We prefer the buckets. A pair of map lights flanks each dome light in the second and third row, a great feature when traveling or accessing gear. the tahoe provides slightly more cargo space behind the second row than the ford expedition does (63. 6 cubic feet vs. 60. 9 cubic feet). Folding the second-row seats down provides enormous cargo capacity, 104. 6 cubic feet of cargo space, a bit less than the expedition's 110. 5 cubic feet. 2002 volkswagen passat review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New w8 model brings power and luxury to passat line. introductionthe volkswagen name was once synonymous with the ultimate in economy, the least expensive cars to buy and operate. A lot has changed since the original beetle, however. Vw’s are still efficient, but they are not the cheapest cars on the lot. now, with the introduction of the passat w8, volkswagen is competing with established luxury marques with a base price flirting with 40 grand. One thing that’s the same, however, is vw’s innovative spirit. Its chassis is 10 percent stiffer for an improved ride and better handling. the passat w8 went on sale in april as a 2002 model. The w8 model is named after its unique eight-cylinder engine, a compact engine with its cylinders in a double v, hence the w8 designation. This results in a midsize sedan with a 4. 0-liter eight-cylinder engine, where all its competitors have at best a v6. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is also available. Two trim-levels are offered, gls and glx. It’s a well-equipped bargain. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, rear window and side mirror defrosters and a multi-function trip computer. gls is also offered with 190-horsepower v6. It comes with a choice of five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic with tiptronic manual shift control. The automatic is required to get volkswagen’s 4motion all-wheel-drive system, currently offered only with the v6. So equipped, the gls lists for $27,075. Glx equipment listed below is available as options on gls. glx trim is the top v6 model. It comes standard with leather upholstery, wood trim, electronic climate control, monsoon audio, heated power driver and passenger seats, a power glass sunroof, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Equipped with 4motion all-wheel drive, the base price for the glx is $31,575. The equivalent wagon retails for $32,375. The only options available for the glx are the automatic transmission, no-charge metallic paint, and a dealer-installed six-disc cd changer and in-dash cd-player. w8 comes with its namesake engine as well as virtually all amenities. In addition to the goodies on the glx, the w8 adds heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a self-dimming rearview mirror as standard equipment. The w8 sedan lists for $37,900, and the wagon for $38,700. A optional sport package includes sportier suspension tuning (presumably firmer shocks and springs and a lower ride height) and 17-inch alloy wheels. A six-speed manual transmission is planned for the 2003 model year. volkswagen extended its warranty coverage for 2002. Passat is covered by a 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty that includes wear-and-tear items and adjustments for the first 12 months or 12,000 miles. The powertrain warranty was reduced to 5 years/60,000 miles, but is now fully transferable. Alterations to the front and rear for 2002 make its avant-garde design bolder still. A new grille with chrome accents is sharply raked and smoothly integrated into the bumper. most passats come with halogen headlamps under clear polycarbonate lenses and standard halogen projector beam foglamps integrated into the front bumper. W8 models come standard with high-intensity gas-discharge (hid) headlamps and headlamp washers. the crisp styling at the rear is highlighted by rear lamps with round lenses for the brake and tail lights. . interioranyone familiar with volkswagens will readily identify the passat’s interior as a member of the family. The dash and seats are cleanly designed and handsome, harmonizing well with the exterior design. Standard even on the base gls model is a dot-matrix readout multifunction trip computer that calculates trip time, trip length, average trip speed and fuel consumption, current fuel consumption, miles to empty and external temperature. There’s even a light for low washer fluid. getting in is easy, with a silicone-damped assist handle over each door. The interior center dome light, with time delay, is complemented by two reading lights front and rear. Doors lock at 8 mph (but can be reprogrammed by the dealer) and unlock for occupant rescue in case of airbag deployment. In addition to the standard front airbags, the passat comes standard with seat-mounted side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags designed to help protect front and rear seat passengers in case of a side collision. seats are firm but comfortable for a long drive. The front seats have a hand-crank recline that has the advantage of being infinitely variable but takes longer and is more awkward to adjust. Vw uses special soft-touch paint for painted interior surfaces. A new console between the front seats has adjustable cupholders and a large storage compartment. two adult males will have adequate room in the back seat, but three will be a squeeze and shouldn’t be contemplated for more than a short ride. Three-point seat belts are provided for the outboard passengers only. Cupholders for the rear seats are located in a fold-down armrest that also has more storage. the sedan’s trunk is truly cavernous, with a flat floor extending the full distance to the seatbacks, which is quite a way. The result is an impressive 15 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and with none of it lost to the trunk lid supports as the passat has articulated trunk lid supports. coming on the w8 during calendar year 2003 is onstar telematics, including automatic notification of airbag deployment, remote unlocking, stolen vehicle tracking, route guidance and more. Owners will also be able to make hands-free cellular calls via onstar personal calling. Eventually, onstar will be available on all volkswagens. . driving impressionpassat comes in a variety of models that all have their individual merits. No surprise, the 270-horsepower w8 eclipses them all with a claimed 6. 5-second dash from 0 to 60 mph. volkswagen shares the 1. 8t with corporate cousin audi. Even more impressive is the broad torque spread, 166 pound-feet from 1950 rpm all the way up to 5000 rpm. Torque, important for those using the passat’s passenger or cargo capacity, is, however, a healthy 206 pound-feet. raw numbers aside, we like the eager feel of the 1. 8t. It has a solid punch down low, thanks to careful tuning of its turbocharger, but really sings at the upper rev range. This engine truly enjoys its work, and working it is especially enjoyable as well. The five-speed manual gearbox contributes an operation delight of its own, with a feel of quality material shaped by careful hands. The shifter slides effortlessly from gear to gear. we drove the passat gls 1. 8t on winding roads in the georgia red clay hills north of atlanta and were impressed by the passat’s ability to accelerate away from slow corners with little drama from the chassis. The passat had none of the squirreliness suffered by many front-driver cars, due in large part to its sophisticated front suspension. cornering is balanced front to rear, with little understeer. The suspension absorbs bumps and potholes like a dry sponge on spilled milk. The passat is solid, with no shakes transmitted through the steering column or the chassis. Big satisfaction in a small package. introductionefficient, practical, affordable, polished and pleasant to drive, if not downright fun, with a reputation for reliability: these are the honda civic's hallmarks, and nothing about the 2005 model suggests anything has changed. measured by the hardware, little has changed on the civic for 2005. There are a couple of new paint colors and a special edition package at the high end of the line-up. On the other hand, price increases are so modest that they haven't kept pace with inflation, and the civic had significant changes inside and out for 2004. few carmakers offer the range or diversity honda builds into the civic line. There are sedans, coupes and a hatchback, with an emphasis on either features and convenience, performance or fuel efficiency and low cost of operation. All are notable for their excellent fuel economy, free-revving engines and solid handling, including the electrically assisted hybrid. Up-level civics come with powerful vtec engines that deliver brisk acceleration. All provide superb comfort for front-seat passengers. three specialized civics are designed specifically to minimize environmental impact and deliver better fuel economy than all but a few cars currently available. The most extreme is the hybrid sedan, which gets up to 51 mpg with help from an electric motor that never needs to be plugged in. Owning and driving a civic hybrid is just like life with a regular civic, almost. The civic hx coupe gets 44 mpg on regular unleaded. There's also a civic gx sedan that burns natural gas; honda claims it has the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world. subtle styling changes were made for 2004 when bumpers, hoods, headlights and grilles on the coupe and sedan were redesigned to emphasize a baby-brother resemblance to the slick, smooth honda accord. The sporty si hatchback was trimmed with new head- and tail lamps. The sedans and coupes offer several engines choices and trim levels. All come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Honda's package-pricing policy means extra equipment is geared to the trim level, with few individual options. A new special edition trim package is offered for 2005. Prices have increased a modest $150 from 2004 for all models except the si, which rises $220. the dx sedan 13,160) and dx coupe 13,810) are the least expensive civics. The dx sedan has wind-up windows and manual locks, and it lacks such features as air conditioning and seat-height adjustment. An optional vp or value package 400) adds air conditioning, a cd player and a center console. The vp is included in the price of the standard dx coupe. in other civic trim levels, the coupes are less expensive. The lx sedan 15,510) and lx coupe 15,310) get the 115-hp engine with more standard equipment, including air conditioning, 15-inch (rather than 14-inch) steel wheels, anti-roll bars front and rear, power-windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat, remote keyless entry and a cd player. the civic ex sedan 17,410) and coupe 17,010) get more power from a more sophisticated 127-horsepower vtec (for variable valve timing) version of the 1. 7-liter engine. Ex also adds 15-inch aluminum wheels, body-colored power mirrors, upgraded audio with six speakers and a tilt-and-slide glass sunroof. The se is actually an option package 450) on the ex. It includes an in-dash 6-disc cd changer with an auxiliary jack for ipod-style mp3 players and satellite radio receivers. The se also adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear-deck spoiler, unique alloy wheels and special badges. the civic si 19,220) is only available as a hatchback and the hatchback is only available as the si. The si comes with a high-output 2. 0-liter vtec engine delivering 160 horsepower, sport tires and suspension and ex-grade features. It's not offered with an automatic. three specialty civics put a particular premium on fuel efficiency. The hx 13,860) comes with dx-style amenities and a lean-burn engine that combines up to 44 mpg highway with an impressive 117 horsepower. The hybrid is equipped comparably to the ex sedan, with a five-speed manual transmission or optional cvt. The hybrid system provides up to 93 horsepower and 116 lb-ft of torque with the electric motor 'assist.' fuel economy is improved up to 30 percent compared to other civic sedans, while meeting the epa's partial zero emissions standard. finally, the civic gx sedan 20,190) comes with 100-hp, natural gas-powered engine that requires a special fueling station for home use. The gx may have the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world, as honda claims, but it's also the most expensive and one of the least powerful civics. For 2005, the gx gets the same styling changes introduced on other civic sedans in 2004. safety equipment includes two-stage front airbags, child seat anchors for the back seat and an emergency release lever inside the trunk, all standard. Side-impact air bags come standard on the hybrid and are optional on all models 250) and we strongly recommend getting them. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on the ex, si, and hybrid, and optional on gx. We wish abs was available on all models. The civic scores well in the national highway traffic safety administration's crash. walkaroundhonda's reputation for space-efficient design holds in the civic. This small car packs its motor into a condensed engine bay, leaving more space for passengers, especially in front, without increasing exterior dimensions. We like the civic's expansive glass, compared to some small cars. We're not crazy about the lever-type door handles, though, the grab-through style is easier to use. now familiar, the civic's basic wedge profile rises from front to rear, with a low, abbreviated prow and high, curt tail. The hood sits amazingly low. Civic's flanks are interrupted only by a single crease that dashes from the front wheel opening to the taillight; there are no body-side moldings. Windshield pillars arch into the rolled roof to meet narrow c-pillars. Bold tail lamps dominate the blunt rear panel. Overall, both the sedan and the coupe remain conservative in appearance, but contemporary in design. for 2005, the new special edition features a prominent rear-deck spoiler, unique alloy wheels and badges that quickly distinguish it from other civics. These features follow more significant styling changes introduced last year, when most models where fitted with redesigned bumpers, grilles, hoods and lights at both ends. The changes are subtle, but suggest the total re-style given big brother accord in 2003. The family resemblance is obvious. the same shared blood is even more obvious between the civic sedan and coupe, yet the two cars are clearly different. While they share the same wheel base and inner structure, most of their exterior panels are not interchangeable. The coupe features a more aggressive windshield rake, intended to create a sportier look, and its tail lamps light up in a signature pattern. Its huge, flat windshield is steeply raked, and its nose slopes radically downward, generating excellent aerodynamics and allowing great visibility outward. The si is slab-sided, without any sculpture in the sheet metal, though in 2004 better proportioned 16-inch wheels gave the car more character by better filling the wheel wells. Some think the si is ugly; others love it and are quick to defend it. interiorgood seats, well-designed controls and excellent outward visibility make the honda civic an easy car to operate. The windows are expansive for a car this size and the hood is low, so the passenger compartment feels airy and open. Sight lines are excellent for driving and parking. From the front seat all civics are comfortable cars; from the back seat, they are less so. front-seat accommodations in the civic are superb for a car in this class. The sedan's seats provide excellent support, thanks to a rigid structure with fairly aggressive side bolsters. High bottom cushions make entry and exit easy, though a lack of height adjustment in the base dx limits tailoring for driver size or taste. The civic coupe's front seatbacks stretch broad and deep, with headrests that are open at the center like a doughnut. The si hatchback's front seats are best of all, offering comfort for longer trips and more aggressive bolstering for hard driving. seat fabrics have been upgraded in recent years, and the look and feel of materials are generally very good. The civic hybrid's interior is most posh of all, with automatic climate control and a two-tone finish lacking in the high-trim ex sedan. 2002 ford explorer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New explorer seats seven. introductionall new for 2002, the ford explorer is better than the previous version in every respect. Handling and ride quality are improved with a new frame and an independent rear suspension. Performance is quicker with new or improved overhead-cam engines. It's a quieter, more refined vehicle with an all-new interior. New safety features are being introduced. but the biggest news for the explorer is the availability of third-row seating, allowing it to carry up to seven passengers. It's roomier and more comfortable, benefits of its longer wheelbase, wider track and some clever engineering. in spite of all this, the new explorer looks familiar inside and out. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Xls and xlt come standard with cloth; eddie bauer and limited come with leather. an overhead-cam v6 engine is now standard on all models, boosting the explorer's power considerably. A new overhead-cam v8 695) is optional on all models. Ford's new five-speed automatic transmission 1095) is optional. Xls does not offer some of the high-zoot options available on the other models, including the v8. xlt 27,780) gets nicer sport cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver's seat, body-colored exterior trim, a cd stereo instead of cassette, and more interior features, such as a temperature gauge and compass, map lights and dome lights, outside approach lighting, extra power outlets, illuminated keypad for keyless entry. The new five-speed automatic transmission is standard, and aluminum alloy wheels replace steel wheels. Leather upholstery with a six-way power driver's seat is available for $655. limited and eddie bauer models (both $34,055) come with leather seating surfaces, automatic dual-zone climate control, a 290-watt six-cd stereo with six speakers, adjustable power pedals, fog lights, and wider tires. Six-way adjustable heated power seats with dual manual lumbar supports are used in front, and the driver's seat has a three-position memory feature. Limited uses monochromatic bumpers, moldings and cladding with a silver grille and special wheels; there's also a white pearl coat limited that uses frost accents. third-row seating 670), auxiliary air conditioning 610), running boards 395), reverse sensing system 255), and power moonroof 800) are options available on all models. A trailer towing prep package 395) replaces the class ii hitch (standard) with a class iii hitch, and adds a 3. 73 limited-slip rear axle and other hardware. front side-impact (side curtain) airbags 495) are optional, which are designed to protect front and second-row occupants. Dual front airbags are standard. Anti-lock brakes are standard. Seatbelts use retractors and pretensioners designed to reduce injuries in a hard crash. The headliner is a new safety canopy (that replaces the side curtain airbags) designed to protect occupants during a rollover in addition to protecting them from a side impact by staying inflated for a much longer period of time. Smarter airbags, ford's advancetrac electronic stability program, power-adjustable pedals, and a telescoping steering wheel will also be added near the end of 2001. Everything on it is new, but the styling is an evolutionary design. It still looks like an explorer, just fresher and more contemporary. Ford didn't want to take any risks with the explorer's design after the styling of the previous taurus was so roundly criticized. It's a handsome vehicle and it looks contemporary. New jeweled headlamps and tail lamps improve safety. Better perimeter lighting from approach lights mounted on the bottoms of the outside mirrors enhances security. Uplevel models come standard with an illuminated keypad on the door for keyless entry. Ford says it's a popular feature among loyal owners. A beefed up roof rack was designed to support up to 200 pounds. while the new explorer attracted little attention, the new mountaineer caused people in parking lots to stop and point; people on the highway would look at it as they passed by, then stare in their mirrors. the new explorer is the same overall length and the previous model, but it sits on a (two-inch) longer wheelbase and a much wider track, making it more stable and more comfortable. Light-colored trim on the inside a-pillars and grab handle add to a light, airy atmosphere. It's a successful execution, though the mouse fur roof liner is nothing to write home about. Leather on the eddie bauer model is attractive, but it seems like they could have put leather on the visible inside edge of the seat bottom. We've only glimpsed the cloth and weren't overly impressed, but it may have been a base xls model. handsome gray wood accents, adjustable pedals, a telescoping steering wheel (cy2002), and increased seat travel make the explorer fit a wider variety of body types. Big coat hooks accommodate thick hangers and big loads of dry cleaning. Nicely designed cubby holes with rubber mats and a relatively large center console help keep odds and ends in check. Interior door handles seem a bit awkward, though, especially on the driver's door; i found myself fumbling around for it at night. Map pockets on the insides of the doors are handy and swell at the end to hold water bottles, but they wouldn't accommodate my one-liter poland springs water bottle. the front seats are comfortable. They are wider and offer more fore-and-aft travel than before. Seat heaters are part of the eddie bauer way of living. The buttons for them are mounted on the sides of seats, which is a bit awkward. Reaching down the side of the driver's seat, the left hand is confronted with an array of seat adjusters. Finding and pressing the seat heater button illuminates a small indicator for each seat on the climate control display. Likewise, it isn't always easy to find the height adjuster. Rake is easy to adjust and there's a knob on the uplevel seats for cranking in some lumbar support. the decision to add a third row of seating drove much of the design and engineering of the 2002 explorer. It isn't comfortable for an adult, however. When cargo space is needed, simply squeeze a lever and lightly push the third row forward. With some practice, it's possible to unlock the rear hatch, open it, and flip the third row out of the way with one hand, which is important when juggling an armload of groceries. The third-row bench folds neatly into the foot well. Well, maybe not so neatly. the downside here is that the cargo floor is not flat in seven-passenger explorers. Neither the second nor the third rows fold perfectly flat. So the floor slopes back toward the rear hatch. Ride quality and handling are greatly im.
